પ્રથમ શ્રીહરિને રે, ચરણે શીશ નમાવું;

નૌતમ લીલા રે, નારાયણની ગાવું. ૧

Pratham Shri Harine re, charane shish namāvu

Nautam lilā re, Nārāyanani gāvu 1

First, I bow my head at the feet of Mahārāj as I sing of His novel divine actions 1

 

મોટા મુનિવર રે, એકાગ્ર કરી મનને;

જેને કાજે રે, સેવે જાઈ વનને. ૨

Motā munivar re, ekāgra kari manane

Jene kāje re, seve jāi vanane 2

Even the great sages, who have focused their minds and go to the forest for worship 2

 

આસન સાધી રે, ધ્યાન ધરીને ધારે;

જેની ચેષ્ટા રે, સ્નેહ કરી સંભારે. ૩

Āsan sādhi re, dhyān dharine dhāre

Jeni cheshtā re, sneh kari sambhāre 3

And have perfected the yogic āsans, meditate upon and fondly remember Mahārāj’s divine

actions 3

 

સહજ સ્વાભાવિક રે, પ્રકૃતિ પુરુષોત્તમની;

સુણતાં સજની રે, બીક મટાડે જમની. ૪

Sahaj swābhāvik re, prakruti Purushottamni

Sunatā sajani re, bik matāde jamni 4

Dear friend, by listening to Mahārāj’s natural inclinations, the fear of Yama [death] is eradicated 4

 

ગાવું હેતે રે, હરિનાં ચરિત્ર સંભારી;

પાવન કરજ્યો રે, પ્રભુજી બુદ્ધિ મારી. ૫

Gāvu hete re, Harinā charitra sambhāri

Pāvan karjo re, Prabhuji buddhi māri 5

I reminisce upon and lovingly sing the divine actions of Mahārāj. Mahārāj, please make my intellect blessed 5

 

સહજ સ્વભાવે રે, બેઠા હોય હરિ જ્યારે;

તુલસીની માળા રે, કર લઈ ફેરવે ત્યારે. ૬

Sahaj swabhāve re, bethā hoy Hari jyāre

Tulsini mālā re, kar lai ferve tyāre 6

When Mahārāj is sitting, He naturally takes a rosary made of Tulsi wood in His hand and turns it 6

 

રમૂજ કરતા રે, રાજીવનેણ રૂપાળા;

કોઈ હરિજનની રે, માગી લઈને માળા. ૭

Ramuj karatā re, Rajiva-nen rupālā

Koi harijanani re, māgi laine mālā 7

Partaking in some humorous activity, charming Mahārāj would ask for a rosary from one of the devotees 7

 

બેવડી રાખી રે, બબ્બે મણકા જોડે;

ફેરવે તાણી રે, કંઈક માળા તોડે.  ૮

Bevadi rākhi re, babbe manakā jode

Ferve tāni re, kaik mālā tode 8

Doubling the mālā, He would swiftly turn two beads together. Often, He would abruptly stop 8

 

વાતું કરે રે, રમૂજ કરીને હસતાં;

ભેળી કરી રે, માળા કરમાં ઘસતાં. ૯

Vātu kare re, ramuj karine hasatā

Bheli kari re, mālā karamā ghasatā 9

While giving a discourse or creating humour, He would [often] laugh. He would [also often] rub a rosary in His hands 9

 

ક્યારેક મીંચી રે, નેત્રકમળને સ્વામી;

પ્રેમાનંદ કહે રે, ધ્યાન ધરે બહુનામી. ૧૦

Kyārek minchi re, netrakamalne Swāmi

Premānand kahe re, dhyān dhare Bahunāmi 10

Premānand says that sometimes, with His lotus-like eyes closed, Mahārāj would meditate 10

 

Pad 2

 

સાંભળ સૈયર રે, લીલા નટનાગરની;

સુણતાં સુખડું રે, આપે સુખસાગરની. ૧

Sāmbhal saiyar re, lila Natnāgarni

Sunatā sukhadu re, āpe Sukhsāgarni 1

Please listen, my friend, to the divine actions of Mahārāj, hearing to which gives bliss 1

નેત્રકમળને રે, રાખી ઉઘાડાં ક્યારે;

ધ્યાન ધરીને રે, બેસે જીવન બા’રે. ૨

Netrakamalne re, rākhi ughādā kyāre

Dhyān dharine re, bese Jivan bāre 2

Sometimes, even with His lotus-like eyes open, He would meditate while sitting outside [on the verandah] 2

 

ક્યારેક ચમકી રે, ધ્યાન કરંતા જાગે;

જોતાં જીવન રે, જન્મમરણ દુઃખ ભાગે. ૩

Kyārek chamki re, dhyān karantā jāge

Jotā jivan re, janma-maran dukh bhāge 3

Sometimes He would become startled and would awake from His meditation. Seeing this, the misery of the cycle of births and deaths is destroyed 3

 

પોતા આગળ રે, સભા ભરાઈ બેસે;

સંત હરિજન રે, સામું જોઈ રહે છે. ૪

Potā āgal re, sabhā bharāi bese

Sant harijan re, samu joi rahe chhe 4

A holy assembly of sādhus and devotees gather in front of Him and constantly look towards Him 4

 

ધ્યાન ધરીને રે, બેઠા હોય હરિ પોતે;

સંત હરિજન રે, તૃપ્ત ન થાય જોતે. ૫

Dhyān dharine re, bethā hoy Hari pote

Sant harijan re, trupta na thāy jote 5

While Mahārāj Himself sits and performs meditation, the sādhus and devotees cannot have enough of the sight 5

 

સાધુ કીર્તન રે, ગાયે વજાડી વાજાં;

તેમને જોઈ રે, મગન થાયે મહારાજા. ૬

Sādhu kirtan re, gāy vajādi vājā

Temne joi re, magan thāy Maharājā 6

Seeing sādhus sing kirtans with the accompaniment of instruments, Mahārāj would become happy 6

 

તેમની ભેળા રે, ચપટી વજાડી ગાયે;

સંત હરિજન રે, નીરખી રાજી થાયે. ૭

Temni bhelā re, chapati vajādi gāye

Sant harijan re, nirakhi rāji thāy 7

Seeing Mahārāj snap His fingers and sing along with them, the sādhus and devotees would become pleased 7

 

ક્યારેક સાધુ રે, ગાય વજાડી તાળી;

ભેળા ગાય રે, તાળી દઈ વનમાળી. ૮

Kyārek sādhu re, gāya vajādi tāli

Bhelā gāya re, tāli dai Vanmāli 8

Sometimes, while the sādhus sang and clapped, Mahārāj would sing and clap along with them 8

 

આગળ સાધુ રે, કીર્તન ગાય જ્યારે;

પોતા આગળ રે, કથા વંચાય ત્યારે. ૯

Āgal sādhu re, kirtan gāya jyāre

Potā āgal re, kathā vanchāy tyāre 9

When sādhus sang kirtans in front of Him, or when the holy scripture were read in front of Him 9

 

પોતે વારતા રે, કરતા હોય બહુનામી;

ખસતા આવે રે, પ્રેમાનંદના સ્વામી. ૧૦

Pote vāratā re, karatā hoi Bahunāmi

Khasatā āve re, Premānandnā Swāmi 10

Or even if He [Himself] delivered a discourse, Premānand’s master would eagerly come sliding forward in His seat 10

 

Pad 3

મનુષ્યલીલા રે, કરતા મંગળકારી;

ભક્તસભામાં રે, બેઠા ભવભયહારી. ૧

Manushyalilā re, karatā Mangalakāri

Bhakta sabhāmā re, bethā Bhavabhayahāri 1

Mahārāj, who makes things auspicious, would perform human-like behaviour. At times, He would sit in an assembly of devotees 1

 

જેને જોતાં રે, જાયે જગ આસક્તિ;

જ્ઞાન વૈરાગ્ય રે, ધર્મ સહિત જે ભક્તિ. ૨

Jene jotā re, jāye jag āsakti

Gnān vairāgya re, dharma sahit je bhakti 2

Worldly desires would disappear upon seeing Him. Bhakti combined with gnān, vairāgya and dharma 2

 

તે સંબંધી રે, વાર્તા કરતા ભારી;

હરિ સમજાવે રે, નિજ જનને સુખકારી. ૩

Te sambandhi re, vārtā karatā bhāri

Hari samjāve re, nija janane Sukhakāri 3

This topic Mahārāj would explain to His devotees by means of a profound discourse 3

 

યોગ ને સાંખ્ય રે, પંચરાત્ર વેદાંત;

એ શાસ્ત્રનો રે, રહસ્ય કહે કરી ખાંત. ૪

Yog ne Sānkhya re, Panchrātra Vedānt

E shāstrano re, rahasya kahe kari khānt 4

He would enthusiastically explain the essence of the scriptures of Yoga, Sānkhya, Panchrātra, and Vedānt 4

 

જ્યારે હરિજન રે, દેશ દેશના આવે;

ઉત્સવ ઉપર રે, પૂજા બહુવિધ લાવે. ૫

Jyāre harijan re, desh deshnā āve

Utsav upar re, pujā bahuvidha lāve

When devotees from various places would arrive for a festival, they would bring various types of offerings 5

 

જાણી પોતાના રે, સેવકજન અવિનાશી;

તેમની પૂજા રે, ગ્રહણ કરે સુખરાશી. ૬

Jāni potānā re, sevakjan Avināshi

Temani pujā re, grahan kare Sukharāshi 6

Knowing the devotees as His own, Mahārāj would accept their offerings 6

 

ભક્ત પોતાના રે, તેને શ્યામ સુજાણ;

ધ્યાન કરાવી રે, ખેંચે નાડી પ્રાણ. ૭

Bhakta potānā re, tene Shyām sujān

Dhyān karāvi re, khenche nādi prān 7

Mahārāj, who is wise, would make His own devotees meditate, thus controlling their life pulse [induce samādhi] 7

 

ધ્યાનમાંથી રે, ઉઠાડે નિજ જનને;

દેહમાં લાવે રે, પ્રાણ ઇન્દ્રિય મનને. ૮

Dhyānmāthi re, uthāde nija janane

Dehmā lāve re, prān indriya manane 8

From this samādhi, He would awaken His devotees and bring back their breath, senses, and minds into their bodies 8

 

સંત સભામાં રે, બેઠા હોય અવિનાશ;

કોઈ હરિજનને રે, તેડવો હોય પાસ. ૯

Sant sabhāmā re, bethā hoy Avināsh

Koi harijanane re, tedvo hoy pāsv 9

While seated in an assembly of sādhus, if Mahārāj would want to summon some devotee near 9

 

પહેલી આંગળી રે, નેત્રતણી કરી સાન;

પ્રેમાનંદ કહે રે, સાદ કરે ભગવાન. ૧૦

Paheli āngali re, netra tani kari sān

Premānand kahe re, sād kare Bhagwān10

He would use His index finger, gesture with His eyes or, call out for him, so says Premānand 10

 

Pad 4

મોહનજીની રે, લીલા અતિ સુખકારી;

આનંદ આપે રે, સુણતાં ન્યારી ન્યારી. ૧

Mohanjini re, lilā ati sukhakāri

Ānand āpe re, sunatā nyāri nyāri 1

Listening to the novel and blissful divine actions of Mahārāj bestows great joy 1

 

ક્યારેક વાતો રે, કરે મુનિવર સાથે;

ગુચ્છ ગુલાબના રે, ચોળે છે બે હાથે. ૨

Kyārek vāto re, kare munivar sāthe

Guchha gulābnā re, chole chhe be hāthe 2

Sometimes He converses with sādhus while stroking a small bunch of roses with His hands 2

 

શીતળ જાણી રે, લીંબુ હાર ગુલાબી;

તેને રાખે રે, આંખ્યો ઉપર દાબી. ૩

Shital jāni re, limbu hār gulābi

Tene rākhe re, ānkhyo upar dābi 3

Knowing garlands of lemons and roses [to be inherently] cool, He would often keep them pressed against His eyes 3

 

ક્યારેક પોતે રે, રાજીપામાં હોયે;

વાતો કરે રે, કથા વંચાવે તોયે. ૪

Kyārek pote re, rājipāmā hoye

Vāto kare re, kathā vanchāy toye 4

Sometimes, in a joyful mood, He would give discourses during kathā [scriptural reading] 4

 

સાંભળે કીર્તન રે, પોતે કાંઈક વિચારે;

પૂછવા આવે રે, જમવાનું કોઈ ત્યારે. ૫

Sāmbhale kirtan re, pote kāik vichāre

Puchhvā āve re, jamvānu koi tyāre 5

Often, listening to kirtans, He would ponder. At this time, if someone were to come to ask Him about His meal, or… 5

 

હાર ચઢાવે રે, પૂજા કરવા આવે;

તેના ઉપર રે, બહુ ખીજી રીસાવે. ૬

Hār chadhāve re, pujā karvā āve

Tenā upar re, bahu khiji risāve 6

...If someone were to put a garland on Him, or if someone were to come to do His pujā,

He would become very upset and annoyed with that person 6

 

કથા સાંભળતાં રે, હરે હરે કહી બોલે;

મર્મ કથાનો રે, સુણી મગન થઈ ડોલે. ૭

Kathā sāmbhaltā re, hare hare kari bole

Marma kathāno re, suni magan thai dole 7

Often, while listening to the scriptural reading, He would exclaim ‘Hare Hare!’. Upon hearing the essence of the reading, He would become pleased and would sway from side to side 7

 

ભાન કથામાં રે, બીજી ક્રિયા માંયે;

ક્યારેક અચાનક રે, જમતાં હરે બોલાયે. ૮

Bhān kathamā re, biji kriyāmāye

Kyārek achānak re, jamatā Hare bolāye 8

His attention would be in scriptural reading even while performing daily activities. At times, He would suddenly exclaim ‘‘Hare!’ even while eating 8

 

થાય સ્મૃતિ રે, પોતાને જ્યારે તેની;

થોડુંક હસે રે, ભક્ત સામું જોઈ બેની. ૯

Thāy smruti re, potāne jyāre teni

Thoduk hase re, bhakta sāmu joi beni 9

My dear friend, when He realised what He had done, He would look towards the devotees and laugh a little 9

 

એમ હરિ નિત નિત રે, આનંદ રસ વરસાવે;

એ લીલા રસ રે, જોઈ પ્રેમાનંદ ગાવે. ૧૦

Em Hari nit-nit re, ānand ras varsāve

E lilāras re, joi Premānand gāve 10

In that way, Mahārāj would constantly shower joy. Premānand sings of those divine acts, having witnessed them 10

 

Pad 5

 

સાંભળ સજની રે, દિવ્ય સ્વરૂપ મુરારી;

કરે ચરિત્ર રે, મનુષ્ય વિગ્રહ ધારી. ૧

Sāmbhal sajani re, divya swarup Murāri

Kare charitra re, Manushya-vigrah-dhāri 1

Listen dear friend, the divine form of Mahārāj,

having assumed a human body, performs various actions 1

 

થયા મનોહર રે, મોહન મનુષ્ય જેવા;

રૂપ અનુપમ રે, નિજ જનને સુખ દેવા. ૨

Thayā manohar re, Mohan manushya jevā Rup anupam re, nija janane sukh devā 2

Mahārāj, who is captivating, became human-like 3

 

ક્યારેક ઢોલિયે રે, બેસે શ્રી ઘનશ્યામ;

ક્યારેક બેસે રે, ચાકળે પૂરણકામ. ૩

Kyārek dholiye re, bese Shri Ghanshyām

Kyārek bese re, chākale Purankām 3

Sometimes Mahārāj would sit on a dholiyo, and sometimes He would sit on a chākalo 3

 

ક્યારેક ગોદડું રે, ઓછાડે સહિત;

પાથર્યું હોય રે, તે પર બેસે પ્રીતે. ૪

Kyārek godadu re, ochhāde sahit

Pātharyu hoye re, te par bese prite 4

Sometimes He would affectionately sit on a covered comforter which was spread [on the floor] 4

 

ક્યારેક ઢોલિયા રે, ઉપર તકિયો ભાળી;

તે પર બેસે રે, શ્યામ પલાંઠી વાળી. ૫

Kyārek dholiyā re, upar takiyo bhāli

Te par bese re, Shyām palāthi vāli 5

Sometimes, upon seeing a cylindrical pillow on top of a dholiyo, He would sit on the pillow cross-legged 5

 

ઘણુંક બેસે રે, તકિયે ઓઠીંગણ દઈને;

ક્યારેક ગોઠણ રે, બાંધે ખેસ લઈને. ૬

Ghanuk bese re, takiye othingan daine

Kyārek gothan re, bāndhe khes laine 6

He would often sit leaning on a cylindrical pillow with one elbow, or sometimes. He would tie His knees with a khes 6

 

ક્યારેક રાજી રે, થાય અતિશે આલી;

સંત હરિજનને રે, ભેટે બાથમાં ઘાલી. ૭

Kyārek rāji re, thāy atishe āli

Sant harijanane re, bhete bāthmā ghāli 7

O friend, sometimes, having become extremely pleased,

He would pull the sādhus and devotees into His arms and embrace them 7

 

ક્યારેક માથે રે, લઈ મેલે બે હાથ;

છાતી માંહે રે, ચરણકમળ દે નાથ. ૮

Kyārek māthe re, lai mele be hāth

Chhātimāhe re, charankamal de Nāth 8

Sometimes He would place His hands on their heads or give footprints of His lotus feet on their chests 8

 

ક્યારેક આપે રે, હાર તોરા ગિરધારી;

ક્યારેક આપે રે, અંગનાં વસ્ત્ર ઉતારી. ૯

Kyārek āpe re, hār torā Giradhāri

Kyārek āpe re, angnā vastra utāri 9

Sometimes, He would give away tassels of flowers or He would take garments decorating His body and give them away 9

 

ક્યારેક આપે રે, પ્રસાદીના થાળ;

પ્રેમાનંદ કહે રે, ભક્તતણા પ્રતિપાળ. ૧૦

Kyārek āpe re, prasādinā thāl

Premānand kahe re, bhakta tanā pratipāl 10

Or sometimes, Premānand says, that the saviour of the devotees would give away His sanctified thāl 10

 

Pad 6

 

એવાં કરે રે, ચરિત્ર પાવનકારી;

શુકજી સરખા રે, ગાવે નિત સંભારી. ૧

Evā kare re, charitra pāvankāri

Shukji sarakhā re, gāve nit sambhāri 1

He would do deeds like these, about which even sages like Shukdev sing and reminisce daily 1

 

ક્યારેક જીભને રે, દાંત તળે દબાવે;

ડાબે જમણે રે, પડખે સહજ સ્વભાવે. ૨

Kyārek jibhne re, dānt tale dabāve

Dābe jamne re, padkhe sahaj swabhāve 2

Sometimes He would press His tongue against the top part

of His teeth, and sometimes, He would move it naturally to the left, right and back part of the mouth 2

 

છીંક જ્યારે આવે રે, ત્યારે રૂમાલ લઈને;

છીંક ખાયે રે, મુખ પર આડો દઈને. ૩

Chhink jyāre āve re, tyāre rumāl laine

Chhink khāye re, mukh par ādo daine 3

When He felt like sneezing, He would put a handkerchief across His mouth and sneeze 3

 

રમૂજ આણી રે, હસે અતિ ઘનશ્યામ;

મુખ પર આડો રે, રૂમાલ દઈ સુખધામ. ૪

Ramuj āni re, hase ati Ghanshyām

Mukh par ādo re, rumāl dai Sukhadhām 4

When in a humorous mood, Mahārāj would laugh a great deal while putting a handkerchief across His mouth 4

 

ક્યારેક વાતું રે, કરતા થકા દેવ;

છેડે રૂમાલને રે, વળ દીધાની† ટેવ. ૫

Kyārek vātu re, kartā thakā Dev

Chhede rumālne re, val didhāni tev 5

He had a habit of rolling the edge of the handkerchief while talking 5

 

અતિ દયાળુ રે, સ્વભાવ છે સ્વામીનો;

પરદુઃખહારી રે, વારી બહુનામીનો. ૬

Ati dayālu re, swabhāv chhe Swāmino

Paradukhahāri re, vāri Bahunāmino 6

Mahārāj’s extremely compassionate nature is good because it rids people’s miseries 6

 

કોઈને દુઃખિયો રે, દેખી ન ખમાયે;

દયા આણી રે, અતિ આકળા થાયે. ૭

Koine dukhiyo re, dekhi na khamāy

Dayā āni re, ati ākalā thāy 7

He could not bear seeing anyone being unhappy.

Seeing this sight, He would become distressed and show compassion 7

 

અન્ન ધન વસ્ત્ર રે, આપીને દુઃખ ટાળે;

કરુણા દ્રષ્ટિ રે, દેખી વાનજ વાળે. ૮

Anna-dhan vastra re, āpine dukh tāle

Karunādrashti re, dekhi vāna ja vaale 8

Giving food, money and clothing, He would rid [people’s] miseries and with His compassionate glance, He would change [people’s] moods 8

 

ડાબે ખભે રે, ખેસ આડસોડે નાખી;

ચાલે જમણા રે, કરમાં રૂમાલ રાખી. ૯

Dābe khabhe re, khes ādsode nākhi

Chāle jamanā re, karamā rumāl rākhi 9

He often wore a scarf thrown over one shoulder.

Sometimes He would walk with a handkerchief in His right hand 9

 

ક્યારેક ડાબો રે, કર કેડ ઉપર મેલી;

ચાલે વહાલો રે, પ્રેમાનંદનો હેલી. ૧૦

Kyārek dābo re, kar ked upar meli

Chāle vahālo re, Premānandno heli 10

Sometimes, Premānand’s companion would walk with His left hand on His waist 10

 

Pad 7

 

નિત નિત નૌતમ રે, લીલા કરે હરિરાય;

ગાતાં સુણતાં રે, હરિજન રાજી થાય. ૧

Nit nit nautam re, lilā kare Harirāya

Gātā sunatā re, harijan rāji thāy 1

The devotees would become happy singing of and

listening to the divine and novel actions that Mahārāj performed daily 1

 

સહજ સ્વભાવે રે, ઉતાવળા બહુ ચાલે;

હેત કરીને રે, બોલાવે બહુ વહાલે. ૨

Sahaj swabhāve re, utavalā bahu chāle

Het karine re, bolāve bahu vahāle 2

His natural tendency was to walk at a pace and He would call [devotees] lovingly 2

 

ક્યારેક ઘોડલે† રે, ચડવું હોય ત્યારે;

ક્યારેક સંતને રે, પીરસવા પધારે. ૩

Kyārek ghode re, chadavu hoy tyāre

Kyārek santne re, pirasava padhāre 3

Sometimes when He would want to mount a horse or when He would arrive to serve the sādhus 3

 

ત્યારે ડાબે રે, ખભે ખેસને આણી;

ખેસને બાંધે રે, કેડ સંગાથે તાણી. ૪

Tyāre dābe re, khabhe khesne āni

Khesne bāndhe re, ked sangāthe tāni 4

He would place a scarf over the left shoulder and tightly tie it around His waist 4

 

પીરસે લાડુ રે, જલેબી ઘનશ્યામ;

જણસ જમ્યાની રે, લઈ લઈ તેનાં નામ. ૫

Pirase lādu re, jalebi Ghanshyām

Janas jamyāni re, lai lai tenā nām 5

He would serve lādus and jalebis calling out the names of the items He served 5

 

ફરે પંગતમાં રે, વારંવાર મહારાજ;

સંત હરિજનને રે, પીરસવાને કાજ. ૬

Fare pangatmā re, vāramvār Mahārāj

Sant harijanane re, pirasvāne kāj 6

Often He would walk around the pangat repeatedly to serve sādhus and devotees 6

 

શ્રદ્ધા ભક્તિ રે, અતિ ઘણી પીરસતાં;

કોઈના મુખમાં રે, આપે લાડુ હસતાં. ૭

Shraddhā bhakti re, ati ghani pirastā

Koinā mukhmā re, āpe lādu hastā 7

He would serve with a great deal of faith and devotion.

Sometimes, He would laughingly place a lādu in someone’s mouth 7

 

પાછલી રાત્રી રે, ચાર ઘડી રહે ત્યારે;

દાતણ કરવા રે, ઊઠે હરિ તે વારે. ૮

Pāchhli rātri re, chār ghadi rahe tyāre

Dātan karavā re, uthe Hari te vāre 8

Mahārāj would awake to do His dātan approximately 1.5 hours before sunrise 8

 

ન્હાવા બેસે રે, નાથ પલાંઠી વાળી;

કર લઈ કળશ્યો રે, જળ ઢોળે વનમાળી. ૯

Nhāvā bese re, Nāth palāthi vāli

Kar lai kalashyo re, jal dhole Vanmāli 9

He would sit cross-legged to bathe, pouring water with a kalash 9

 

કોરે વસ્ત્રે રે, કરી શરીરને લુવે;

Kore vastre re, kari sharirane luve

Premānand kahe re, harijan sarve juve 10

Premānand says that all the devotees gaze

at [the sight of] Mahārāj wiping His body with a dry cloth 10

રૂડા શોભે રે, નાહીને ઊભા હોયે;

વસ્ત્ર પહેરેલું રે, સાથળ વચ્ચે નીચોવે. ૧

Rudā shobhe re, nāhine ubhā hoye

Vastra paherelu re, sāthal vacche nichove 1

When standing after bathing, Mahārāj looked handsome.

He would often wring His worn [and washed] clothing between His thighs 1

 

પગ સાથળને રે, લુહીને સારંગપાણી;

કોરા ખેસને રે, પહેરે સારી પેઠે તાણી. ૨

Pag sāthalne re, luhine Sārangpāni

Korā khesne re, pahere sāri pethe tāni 2

After drying His legs and thighs, Mahārāj would wear a dry garment [dhotiyu] tightly 2

 

ઓઢી ઉપરણી રે, રેશમી કોરની વહાલે;

આવે જમવા રે, ચાખડિયે ચઢી ચાલે. ૩

Odhi uparni re, reshmi korni Vahāle

Āve jamvā re, chākhadiye chadhi chāle 3

Having wrapped a silk-bordered upper garment around himself, Mahārāj would arrive to eat wearing chākhadis 3

 

માથે ઉપરણી રે, ઓઢી બેસે જમવા;

કાન ઉઘાડા રે, રાખે મુજને ગમવા. ૪

Māthe uparni re, odhi bese jamvā

Kān ughādā re, rākhe mujne gamvā 4

He would sit to dine with an upper garment covering His head, leaving His ears uncovered for my enjoyment 4

 

જમતાં ડાબા રે, પગની પલાંઠી વાળી;

તે પર ડાબો રે, કર મેલે વનમાળી. ૫

Jamtā dābā re, pagni palāthi vāli

Te par dābo re, kar mele Vanmāli 5

While dining, He would place His left hand upon His folded left leg 5

 

જમણા પગને રે, રાખી ઊભો શ્યામ;

તે પર જમણો રે, કર મેલે સુખધામ. ૬

Jamnā pagne re, rākhi ubho Shyām

Te par jamano re, kar mele Sukhadhām 6

While dining, He would place His right hand over His upright right leg 6

 

રૂડી રીતે રે, જમે દેવના દેવ;

વારે વારે રે, પાણી પીધાની ટેવ. ૭

Rudi rite re, jame devnā dev

Vāre vāre re, pāni pidhāni tev 7

This God of gods would dine [in a] charming manner

and had a habit of drinking water repeatedly [while dining] 7

 

જણસ સ્વાદુ રે, જણાયે જમતાં જમતાં;

પાસે હરિજન રે, બેઠા હોય મનગમતાં. ૮

Janas swādu re, janāya jamatā jamatā

Pāse harijan re, bethā hoy managamatā 8

While dining, He would give His favored devotees those food items which He found tasty 8

 

તેમને આપી રે, પછી પોતે જમે;

જમતાં જીવન રે, હરિજનને મન ગમે. ૯

Temne āpi re, pachhi pote jame Jamtā Jivan re, harijanane man game 9

Only after that would He dine. Devotees enjoyed [watching] Mahārāj din 9

 

ફેરવે જમતાં રે, પેટ ઉપર હરિ હાથ;

ઓડકાર ખાય રે, પ્રેમાનંદના નાથ. ૧૦

Ferave jamtā re, pet upar Hari hāth

Odkār khāye re, Premānandnā Nāth 10

While dining Premānand’s master would rub His hand on His stomach and sometimes burp 10

 

Pad 9

ચળું કરે રે, મોહન તૃપ્ત થઈને;

દાંતને ખોતરે રે, સળી રૂપાની લઈને. ૧

Chalu kare re, Mohan trupta thaine

Dānt ne khotare re, sali rupāni laine 1

Having become satisfied [after dining], He would do chalu [wash His hands and mouth] and then clean His teeth with a silver toothpick 1

 

મુખવાસ લઈને રે, ઢોલિયે બિરાજે;

પૂજા કરે રે, હરિજન હેતે ઝાઝે. ૨

Mukhvās laine re, dholiye birāje

Pujā kare re, Harijan hete jhājhe 2

Having taken some mukhvās, He would sit on a dholiyo,

and devotees would with abundance lovingly perform (His) pujā 2

 

પાંપણ ઉપર રે, આંટો લઈ અલબેલો;

ફેંટો બાંધે રે, છોગું મેલી છેલો. ૩

Pāpan upar re, ānto lai Alabelo

Feto bāndhe re, chhogu meli Chhelo 3

Mahārāj would tie a twisted feto [around His head]

just above His eyebrows and would leave a chhogu at one end 3

 

વર્ષા ઋતુને રે, શરદ ઋતુને જાણી;

ઘેલા નદીનાં રે, નિર્મળ નીર વખાણી. ૪

Varshā rutune re, Sharad rutune jāni

Ghelā nadinā re, nirmal nir vakhāni 4

Knowing the end of monsoon or the start of winter [had arrived], He would praise the pure water of the Ghelā River 4

 

સંત હરિજનને રે, સાથે લઈ ઘનશ્યામ;

ન્હાવા પધારે રે, ઘેલે પૂરણકામ. ૫

Sant harijanane re, sāthe lai Ghanshyām

Nhāvā padhāre re, Ghele Purankām 5

Mahārāj would take along sādhus and devotees and would arrive at the Ghelā to bathe 5

 

બહુ જળક્રીડા રે, કરતાં જળમાં ન્હાય;

જળમાં તાળી રે, દઈને કીર્તન ગાય. ૬

Bahu jalkridā re, karatā jalmā nhāy 

Jalmā tāli re, daine kirtan gāya 6

While engaging in amusement in the water, He would clap while singing kirtans 6

 

નાહીને બા’રે રે, નીસરી વસ્ત્ર પહેરી;

ઘોડે બેસી રે, ઘેર આવે રંગલહેરી. ૭

Nāhine bāre re, nisari vastra paheri

Ghode besi re, gher āve Rang-laheri 7

He would come out [of the water] after bathing, and having worn [dry clothes], Mahārāj would come home [to the darbār] sitting on a horse 7

 

પાવન જશને રે, હરિજન ગાતા આવે;

જીવન જોઈને રે, આનંદ ઉર ન સમાવે. ૮

Pāvan jashne re, harijan gātā āve

Jivan joine re, ānand ur na samāve  8 

The devotees would return while singing His auspicious glory,

and the joy of seeing Mahārāj could not be contained in their hearts 8

 

ગઢપુરવાસી રે, જોઈને જગ આધાર;

સુફળ કરે છે રે, નેણાં વારમવાર. ૯

Gadhpurvāsi re, joine Jag-ādhār

Sufal kare chhe re, nenā vāramvār 9 

Seeing Mahārāj, the residents of Gadhadā would repeatedly feel that their eyes had become fruitful 9

 

આવી બિરાજે રે, ઓસરીયે બહુનામી;

ઢોલિયા ઉપર રે, પ્રેમાનંદના સ્વામી. ૧૦

Āvi birāje re, osariye Bahunāmi

Dholiyā upar re, Premānandnā Swāmi 10

Upon arrival, Premānand’s master would sit on a dholiyo in the courtyard [of the darbār].10

 

Pad 10

 

નિજ સેવકને રે, સુખ દેવાને કાજ;

પોતે પ્રગટ્યા રે, પુરુષોત્તમ મહારાજ. ૧

Nij sevakne re, sukh devāne kāj

Pote pragatyā re, Purushottam Mahārāj 1

For the purpose of giving bliss to His own disciples, Mahārāj who is God Himself has manifested 1

 

ફળિયામાંહી રે, સભા કરી વિરાજે;

પૂરણ શશી રે, ઉડુગણમાં જેમ છાજે. ૨

Faliyāmāhi re, sabhā kari virāje

Puran shashi re, uduganmā jem chhāje  2

Having finished sabhā, He would sit in the courtyard [amongst the paramhansas], shining like the full moon amidst the star-filled sky. 2

 

બ્રહ્મરસ વરસી રે, તૃપ્ત કરે હરિજનને;

પોઢે રાત્રે રે, જમી શ્યામ શુદ્ધ અન્નને. ૩

Brahmaras varasi re, trupta kare harijanane 

Podhe rātre re, jami Shyām shuddh annane [ 3 ]

He would fulfill the devotees by showering the bliss of God.

At night, having eaten a simple meal, Mahārāj would retire to bed. 3

 

બે આંગળિયું રે, તિલક કર્યાની પેરે;

ભાલ વચ્ચે રે, ઊભી રાખી ફેરે. ૪

Be āngaliyu re, tilak karyāni pere

 Bhāl vacche re, ubhi rākhi fere 4

He would rub two fingers upright in the middle of His forehead, as if applying a tilak 4

 

સૂતાં સૂતાં રે, માળા માગી લઈને;

જમણે હાથે રે, નિત ફેરવે ચિત્ત દઈને. ૫

Sutā sutā re, mālā māgi laine

Jamane hāthe re, nit ferave chitta daine 5

Daily, while lying in bed, He would ask for a rosary and would turn it with His right hand with utmost concentration 5

 

ભૂલ ન પડે રે, કેદી એવું નેમ;†

ધર્મકુંવરની રે, સહજ પ્રકૃતિ એમ. ૬

Bhul na pade re, ke’di evu nem 

Dharmakunvarni re, sahaj prakruti em 6

Mahārāj’s natural inclination was such that a breach in such niyams would never occur on any day 6

 

ભર નિદ્રામાં રે, પોઢ્યા હોય મુનિરાયે;

કોઈ અજાણે રે, લગાર અડી‡ જાયે. ૭

Bhara Nidrāmā re, podhyā hoy Munirāy, Koi ajāne re, lagār adki jāy 7

[Even while] in deep sleep, [if] someone were to accidentally touch Him 7

 

ત્યારે ફડકી રે, જાગે સુંદર શ્યામ;

‘કોણ છે?’ પૂછે રે, સેવકને સુખધામ. ૮

Tyāre fadki re, jāge Sundar Shyām, 

‘Kon chhe?’ puchhe re, sevakne Sukhadhām 8

At that time, Mahārāj would suddenly awake and ask His attendant, 'Who is it?' 8

 

એવી લીલા રે, હરિની અનંત અપાર;

મેં તો ગાઈ રે, કાંઈક મતિ અનુસાર. ૯

Evi lilā re, Harini anant apār

 Me to gāi re, kāik mati anusār 9

I have sung such endless and infinite divine actions of Mahārāj according to my slight intellect 9

 

જે કોઈ પ્રીતે રે, શીખશે સુણશે ગાશે;

પ્રેમાનંદનો રે, સ્વામી રાજી થાશે. ૧૦

Je koi prite re, shikhshe sunashe gāshe 

Premānandno re, Swāmi rāji thāshe10

Premānand’s Swāmi will become pleased on whosoever affectionately learns, listens to, and sings [these divine actions]. 10

 

Orā āvo Shyām sanehi

 ઓરા આવો શ્યામ સનેહી, સુંદર વર જોઉં વ્હાલા;

જતન કરીને જીવન મારા, જીવમાંહી પ્રોઉં વ્હાલા... ૧

Orā āvo Shyām sanehi, sundarvar jou Vhālā

Jatan karine jivan mārā, jivamāhi prou Vhālā 1

My beloved Mahārāj, You are the most handsome of all; come near so that I may see you. You are my life, and with great care, I shall thread [Your image] into my soul 1

 

ચિહ્ન અનુપમ અંગોઅંગનાં, સૂરતે સંભારું વ્હાલા;

નખશિખ નીરખી નૌતમ મારા, ઉરમાં ઉતારું વ્હાલા... ૨

Chinha anupam ango-angnā, surate sambhāru Vhālā

Nakh-shikh nirakhi nautam mārā, urma utāru Vhālā 2

With concentration, I remember the indescribable signs on the various parts of your body. As I see the [various] parts of Your body from head to toe, which always seem novel, I place [their image] into my heart 2

 

અરુણ કમળસમ જુગલ ચરણની, શોભા અતિ સારી વ્હાલા;

ચિંતવન કરવા આતુર અતિ, મન વૃત્તિ મારી વ્હાલા... ૩

Arun kamalsam jugal charanani, shobhā ati sāri Vhālā

Chintavan karvā ātur ati, manavrutti māri Vhālā 3

Your feet, coloured red [pink] like lotuses, are extremely beautiful. My mind is extremely eager to contemplate [on them]. 3

 

પ્રથમ તે ચિંતવન કરું, સુંદર સોળે ચિહ્ન વ્હાલા;

ઓરા આવો શ્યામ સનેહી, સુંદર વર જોઉં વ્હાલા;

જતન કરીને જીવન મારા, જીવમાંહી પ્રોઉં વ્હાલા... 4

Pratham te chintavan karu, sundar sole chinha Vhālā

Urdhva-rekhā opi rahi, atishe navin Vhālā 4

I first contemplate on all sixteen beautiful signs on Your feet. The Urdhva-rekha is striking and extremely novel. 4

 

ચિહ્ન અનુપમ અંગોઅંગનાં, સૂરતે સંભારું વ્હાલા;

નખશિખ નીરખી નૌતમ મારા, ઉરમાં ઉતારું વ્હાલા... 5

Anguthā āngali vacchethi, nisarine āvi Vhālā

Pānini be kore jotā, bhaktane man bhāvi Vhālā 5

As it emanates from between the big toe and second toe and [forks] to both sides of the heel, seeing which, the devotees’ minds are pleased. 5

 

જુગલ ચરણમાં કહું મનોહર, ચિહ્ન તેનાં નામ વ્હાલા;

શુદ્ધ મને કરી સંભારતાં, નાશ પામે કામ વ્હાલા... ૬

Jugal charanmā kahu manohar, chinha tenā nām Vhālā

Shuddha mane kari sambhāratā, nāsh pāme kām Vhālā 6

Now I shall tell you the names of the captivating [divine] signs on

[Mahārāj’s] feet. By recalling these signs with a pure mind, desires are destroyed 6

 

અષ્ટકોણ ને ઊર્ધ્વરેખા, સ્વસ્તિક જાંબુ જવ વ્હાલા;

વજ્ર અંકુશ કેતુ ને પદ્મ, જમણે પગે નવ વ્હાલા... ૭

Ashtakon ne urdhva-rekhā, swastik, jambu, jav Vhālā

Vajra, ankush, ketu ne padma, jamane page nav Vhālā 7

An octagon, urdhva-rekhā, swastik, jambu, barley, thunder bolt, ankush, flag and lotus are the nine signs on His right foot 7

 

ત્રિકોણ કળશ ને ગોપદ સુંદર, ધનુષ ને મીન વ્હાલા;

અર્ધચંદ્ર ને વ્યોમ સાત છે, ડાબે પગે ચિહ્ન વ્હાલા... ૮

Trikon, kalash ne gopad sundar, dhanush ne min Vhālā

Ardhachandra ne vyom sāt chhe, dābe page chinha Vhālā 8

A triangle, kalash, beautiful gopad (cow's hoof-print), bow, fish, crescent-moon, and sky are the seven signs on the left foot 8

 

જમણા પગના અંગૂઠાના, નખમાંહી ચિહ્ન વ્હાલા;

તે તો નીરખે જે કોઈ ભક્ત, પ્રીતિએ પ્રવીણ વ્હાલા... ૯

Jamanā pagnā anguthānā, nakhamāhi chinha Vhālā

Te to nirakhe je koi bhakta, pritie pravin Vhālā 9

There is a mark inside the nail of the right foot’s big toe. Any devotee who sees this mark develops perfect affection 9

 

એ જ અંગૂઠાની પાસે, તિલ એક નૌતમ ધારું વ્હાલા;

પ્રેમાનંદ કહે નીરખું પ્રીતે, પ્રાણ લઈ વારું વ્હાલા... ૧૦

I meditate upon the seemingly novel beauty mark near that same [right] big toe. Premānand Swāmi says that I would sacrifice my life to affectionately view [these marks] 10

 

Have mārā Vahālāne nahi re

Pad 1

હવે મારા વહાલાને નહિ રે વિસારું રે,

 શ્વાસ ઉચ્છ્‍વાસે તે નિત્ય સંભારું રે. ૧

Have mārā Vahālāne nahi re visāru re,

Shvāso-chhvāse te nitya sambhāru re 1

I will never forget my Beloved, with every breath I regularly remember [Him] 1

 

પડ્યું મારે સહજાનંદજી શું પાનું રે,

 હવે હું તો કેમ કરી રાખીશ છાનું રે. ૨

Padyu māre Sahajānandji shu pānu re,

Have hu to kem kari rākhish chhānu re 2

Having attained Sahajānandji, how can I now possibly keep it a secret? 2

 

આવ્યું મારે હરિવર વરવાનું ટાણું રે,

 એ વર ન મળે ખરચે નાણું રે. ૩

Āvyu māre Harivar varvānu tānu re,

E var na male kharache nānu re 3

The time has come for me to wed Mahārāj.

[an attainment] that cannot be obtained by spending money 3

 

એ વર ભાગ્ય વિના નવ ભાવે રે,

 એ સ્નેહ લગ્ન વિના નવ આવે રે. ૪

E var bhāgya vinā nav bhāve re,

E sneh lagna vinā nav āve re 4

That attainment cannot be enjoyed without fortune. 

That love doesn’t come without an internal desire 4

 

દુરિજન મન રે માને તેમ કહેજ્યો રે,

 સ્વામી મારા હૃદયાની ભીતર રહેજ્યો રે. ૫

Durijan man re māne tem kahejyo re,

Swāmi mārā hrudiyāni bhitar rahejyo re 5

Let the non-believers speak whatever their minds believe. 

Mahārāj, [please] reside inside my heart 5

 

હવે હું તો પૂરણ પદવીને પામી રે,

 મળ્યા મુને નિષ્કુળાનંદના સ્વામી રે. ૬

Have hu to puran padvine pāmi re,

Malyā mune Nishkulānandnā Swāmi 6

Having attained Nishkulānand’s master,

I have now attained a status of perfection 6

Pad 2

હવે મારા વહાલાનાં દર્શન સારુ,

 હરિજન આવે હજારે હજારું. ૧

Have mārā Vahālānā darshan sāru,

Harijan āve hajāre hajāru. 1

Now, thousands and thousands of devotees come for My beloved’s darshan. 1

 

ઢોલિયે બિરાજે સહજાનંદ સ્વામી,

 પૂરણ પુરુષોત્તમ અંતરજામી. ૨

Dholiye birāje Sahajānand Swāmi,

Puran Purushottam antaryāmi.2

Sahajānand Swāmi, who is the ultimate [supreme] Godhead, and who is omniscient, now sits on a dholiyo.2

 

સભા મધ્યે બેઠાં મુનિનાં વૃંદ;

 તેમાં શોભે તારે વીંટ્યો જેમ ચંદ્ર. ૩

Sabhā madhye bethā muninā vrund,

Temā shobhe tāre vintyo jem chandra.3

He [Mahārāj] sits amidst an assembly of sādhus

just as the moon looks beautiful when encircled by stars in the sky 3.

 

દુર્ગપુર ખેલ રચ્યો અતિ ભારી,

 ભેળા રમે સાધુ અને બ્રહ્મચારી. ૪

Durgapur khel rachyo ati bhāri,

Bhelā rame sādhu ane brahmachāri 4

In Gadhadā, a divine 'dance' takes place [assembly gathers], in

which [Mahārāj] 'plays' [converses] together with sādhus and brahmachāris 4

 

તાળી પડે ઊપડતી અતિ સારી,

 ધૂન્ય થાય ચૌદ લોક થકી ન્યારી. ૫

Tāli pade upadati ati sāri,

Dhunya thāy chaud lok thaki nyāri 5

While clapping rapidly, an enchanting dhun is sung, unique in the 14 loks 5

 

પાઘલડીમાં છોગલિયું અતિ શોભે,

 જોઈ જોઈ હરિજનનાં મન લોભે. ૬

Pāghaladimā chhogaliyu ati shobhe,

Joi joi harijananā man lobhe 6

The devotees’ minds become infatuated on seeing Mahārāj’s extremely beautiful chhogalu on His pāgh 

 

પધાર્યા વહાલો સર્વે તે સુખના રાશી,

 સહજાનંદ અક્ષરધામના વાસી. ૭

Padhāryā vahālo sarve te sukhnā rāshi,

Sahajānand Akshardhāmnā Vāsi.7

Thus arrived our beloved [Mahārāj], an abundance of bliss, and resident of Akshardhām.7

 

ભાંગી મારી જન્મોજનમની ખામી,

 મળ્યા મુને નિષ્કુળાનંદના સ્વામી. ૮

Bhāngi māri janamo-janamni khāmi,

Malyā mune Nishkulānandnā Swāmi.8

Having attained Nishkulānand’s master,

the shortcomings of all my births have been destroyed.8

 

[Meditate]

 

Podhe Prabhu sakal munike Shyām

પોઢે પ્રભુ સકલ મુનિકે શ્યામ;

સ્વામિનારાયણ દિવ્ય મૂર્તિ, સંતનકે વિશ્રામ... ટેક

Podhe Prabhu sakal munike Shyām;

Swāminārāyan divyamurti, Santanke Visharām... Podhe

Mahārāj, the God of all sādhus, now sleeps. Swāminārāyan’s divine murti is the refuge of all sādhus.

અક્ષર પર આનંદઘન પ્રભુ, કિયો હે ભૂપર ઠામ;

જેહી મિલત જન તરત માયા, લહત અક્ષરધામ... પોઢે ૧

Akshar par ānandghan Prabhu, kiyo he bhupar thām;

Jehi milat jan tarat māyā, lahat Akshardhām... Podhe [ 1 ]

Mahārāj, who is above Akshar and who is completely blissful,

has taken residence upon this earth. Any person who associates with Him, crosses māyā and attains Akshardhām.1

 

શારદ શેષ મહેશ મહામુનિ, જપત જેહી ગુણનામ;

જાસ પદરજ શીશ ધરી ધરી, હોત જન નિષ્કામ... પોઢે ૨

Shārad Shesh Mahesh mahāmuni, japat jehi gunanām;

Jās padaraj shish dhari dhari, hota jan nishkām... Podhe 2

Lakshmi, Shesh Nāg, Shiva and great sages chant His virtuous name.

By placing the dust from His feet on their heads, people become free from desires.2

 

પ્રેમકે પર્યંક પર પ્રભુ, કરત સુખ આરામ;

મુક્તાનંદ નિજ ચરણ ઢિગ ગુન, ગાવત આઠું જામ... પોઢે ૩

Premake paryank par Prabhu, karat sukha ārām;

Muktānand nija charan dhiga gun, gāvat āthu jām... Podhe [ 3 ]

Mahārāj peacefully rests on a bed prepared with love.

Sitting near God’s feet, Muktānand constantly sings His virtues 24 hours a day.3

 

Re Shyām tame sāchu nānu

રે શ્યામ તમે સાચું નાણું, બીજું સર્વે દુઃખદાયક જાણું... ꠶ટેક

Re Shyām tame sāchu nānu,

Biju sarve dukhdāyak jānu... Re Shyām

Mahārāj, You are the true wealth; I have realised everything else to be misery-inducing.

 

રે તમ વિના સુખ સંપત કહાવે, તે તો સર્વે મહાદુઃખ ઉપજાવે;

  અંતે એમાં કામ કોઈ નાવે... રે શ્યામ꠶ ૧

Re tam vinā sukh sampat kahāve, Te to sarve mahādukh upajāve,

Ante emā kām koi nāve... Re Shyām. 1

Without You, all the so-called wealth and happiness of this world create great misery. Ultimately, they are all useless. 2

 

રે મૂરખ લોક મરે ભટકી, જૂઠા સંગે હારે શિર પટકી;

  તેથી મારી મનવૃત્તિ અટકી... રે શ્યામ꠶ ૨

Re murakh lok mare bhataki, Juthā sange hāre shir pataki,

Tethi māri manavrutti ataki... Re Shyām. 2

[Let the] foolish people [of the world] die wandering; Let them fall, beating their heads with false company. My mind [is now] refraining from those [activities]. 2

 

રે અખંડ અલૌકિક સુખ સારુ, રે જોઈ જોઈ મન મોહ્યું મારું;

  ધરા ધન તમ ઉપર વારું... રે શ્યામ꠶ ૩

Re akhand alaukik sukh sāru, Re joi joi man mohyu māru

Dharā dhan tam upar vāru... Re Shyām.3

My mind has become infatuated by seeing that eternal and other-worldly happiness. I sacrifice [all my] land and money to You.3

 

રે બ્રહ્માથી કીટ લગી જોયું, જૂઠું સુખ જાણીને વગોવ્યું;

  મુક્તાનંદ મન તમ સંગ મોહ્યું... રે શ્યામ꠶ ૪

Re Brahmāthi kit lagi joyu, Juthu sukh jānine vagovyu,

Muktānand man tam sang mohyu... Re Shyām.4

I have seen the pleasures [enjoyed by beings] from Brahmā to the smallest insect.

Realising them to be false, I have denounced them.

Muktānand’s mind has become infatuated with Your company.4

 

Dhyānchintāmani

Pad 1 

વંદું સહજાનંદ રસરૂપ, અનુપમ સારને રે લોલ;

જેને ભજતાં છૂટે ફંદ, કરે ભવ પારને રે લોલ...  ૧

Vandu Sahajānand rasarup, anupam sārane re lol;

Jene bhajatā chhute fand, kare bhav pārane re lol.1

I bow to Mahārāj, full of bliss, indescribable, and the essence [of all]. Worshipping whom releases [one from] the net [of māyā and allows one] to transgress the cycle of births and deaths. 1

 

સમરું પ્રગટ રૂપ સુખધામ, અનુપમ નામને રે લોલ;

જેને ભવ બ્રહ્માદિક દેવ, ભજે તજી કામને રે લોલ...  ૨

Samaru pragat rup sukhadhām, anupam nāmane re lol;

Jene Bhav Brahmādik dev, bhaje taji kāmane re lol.2

I remember the manifest form of Mahārāj, whose glory is boundless. [I remember Mahārāj] whom Shiv, Brahmā, and other deities worship, having relinquished [all] desires.2

 

જે હરિ અક્ષરબ્રહ્મ આધાર, પાર કોઈ નવ લહે રે લોલ;

જેને શેષ સહસ્રમુખ ગાય, નિગમ નેતિ કહે રે લોલ...  ૩

Je Hari Aksharbrahma ādhār, pār koi nav lahe re lol; Jene Shesh sahasra-mukh gāy, Nigam neti kahe re lol.3

No one can transcend Mahārāj, who is the upholder of [even] Aksharbrahma. [I remember Mahārāj] of whom Sheshnāg sings with his 1000 mouths, and whom the Vedas define as indescribable.3

 

વર્ણવું સુંદર રૂપ અનુપ, જુગલ ચરણે નમી રે લોલ;

નખશિખ પ્રેમસખીના નાથ, રહો ઉરમાં રમી રે લોલ...  ૪

Varnavu sundar rup anup, jugal charane nami re lol;

Nakha-shikh Premsakhinā Nāth, raho uramā rami re lol.4

Bowing at [His] two feet, I [seek to] describe the beauty of His indescribable form. May Premsakhi’s master reside completely, from head to toe, in my heart..4

 

Pad 2

આવો મારા મોહન મીઠડા લાલ, કે જોઉં તારી મૂરતિ રે લોલ;

જતન કરી રાખું રસિયા રાજ, વિસારું નહિ ઉરથી રે લોલ...  ૧

Āvo mārā Mohan mithadā lāl, ke jou tāri murti re lol;

Jatan kari rākhu Rasiyārāj, visāru nahi urathi re lol.1

Come, my charming Mahārāj, [so that] I may look at Your murti.

I'll keep Mahārāj carefully [in my heart], and shall not forget Him from within.1

 

મન મારું મોહ્યું મોહનલાલ, પાઘલડીની ભાતમાં રે લોલ;

આવો ઓરા છોગલાં ખોસું છેલ, ખાંતિલા જોઉં ખાંતમાં રે લોલ...  ૨

Man māru mohyu Mohanlāl, pāghaladini bhātmā re lol;

Āvo orā chhogalā khosu chhel, khāntilā jou khāntmā re lol.2

O Mahārāj, my mind has been enticed by the variety of Your pāghs. Mahārāj, come near so that I may insert decorative feathers into Your pāgh and see You enthusiastically.2

 

વહાલા તારું ઝળકે સુંદર ભાલ, તિલક રૂડાં કર્યાં રે લોલ;

વહાલા તારા વામ કરણમાં તિલ, તેણે મનડાં હર્યાં રે લોલ...  ૩

Vahālā tāru jhalake sundar bhāl, tilak rudā karyā re lol;

Vahālā tārā vāmkaranmā til, tene manadā haryā re lol.3

Mahārāj, Your beautiful forehead, with its exquisite tilak shines. Mahārāj, the beauty mark on Your left ear has won over my mind.3

 

વહાલા તારી ભૃકુટિને બાણે શ્યામ, કાળજ મારાં કોરિયાં રે લોલ;

નેણે તારે પ્રેમસખીના નાથ, કે ચિત્ત મારાં ચોરિયાં રે લોલ...  ૪

Vahālā tāri bhrakutine bāne Shyām, kāraj mārā koriyā re lol;

Nene tāre Premsakhinā Nāth, ke chitta mārā choriyā re lol.4

Mahārāj, the curve of Your eyebrow has pierced my heart. The eyes of Premsakhi’s master have captivated my mind.4

 

Pad 3

વહાલા મુને વશ કીધી ઘનશ્યામ, વા’લપ તારા વા’લમાં રે લોલ;

મન મારું તલખે જોવા કાજ, ટીબકડી છે ગાલમાં રે લોલ...  ૧

Vahālā mune vash kidhi Ghanshyām, Vā’lap tārā vā’lmā re lol;

Man māru talakhe jovā kāj, tibakadi chhe gālmā re lol.1

Ghanshyām! Your affection has totally won me over.

My mind is eager to see the beauty mark on Your cheek.1

 

વહાલા તારી નાસિકા નમણી નાથ, અધરબિંબ લાલ છે રે લોલ;

છેલા મારા પ્રાણ કરું કુરબાન, જોયા જેવી ચાલ છે રે લોલ...  ૨

Vahālā tāri nāsikā namani Nāth, adhar-bimba lāl chhe re lol;

Chhelā mārā prān karu kurabān, joyā jevi chāl chhe re lol.2

Mahārāj, Your nose is curved and pointed; Your lips are red. Mahārāj, I sacrifice my life to witness Your walk.2

 

વહાલા તારા દંત દાડમના બીજ, ચતુરાઈ ચાવતા રે લોલ;

વહાલા મારા પ્રાણ હરો છો નાથ, મીઠું મીઠું ગાવતા રે લોલ...  ૩

Vahālā tārā dant dādamnā bij, chaturāi chāvatā re lol;

Vahālā mārā prān haro chho Nāth, mithu mithu gāvatā re lol.3

Mahārāj, You have a graceful way of chewing with Your teeth, which resemble pomegranate seeds. Mahārāj, Your sweet singing takes my breath away.3

 

વહાલા તારે હસવે હરાણું ચિત્ત, બીજું હવે નવ ગમે રે લોલ;

મન મારું પ્રેમસખીના નાથ, કે તમ કેડે ભમે રે લોલ...  ૪

Vahālā tāre hasave harānu chitt, biju have nav game re lol;

Man māru Premsakhinā Nāth, ke tam kede bhame re lol.4

Mahārāj, my mind has been stolen by Your laugh. Now I don't like anything else. My mind constantly wanders behind Premsakhi’s master.4

 

Pad 4

રસિયા જોઈ રૂપાળી કોટ, રૂડી રેખાવળી રે લોલ;

વહાલા મારું મનડું મળવા ચ્હાય, કે જાય ચિત્તડું ચળી રે લોલ...  ૧

Rasiyā joi rupāli kot, rudi rekhāvali re lol;

Vahālā māru manadu malavā chāy, ke jāy chittadu chali re lol.1

Mahārāj, I have seen the attractive lines on Your beautiful neck.

Mahārāj, my mind craves to meet You and is entranced [in Your thoughts].1

 

વહાલા તારી જમણી ભુજાને પાસ, રૂડાં તિલ ચાર છે રે લોલ;

વહાલા તારા કંઠ વચ્ચે તિલ એક, અનુપમ સાર છે રે લોલ...  ૨

Vahālā tāri jamani bhujāne pās, ruda til chār chhe re lol;

Vahālā tārā kanth vachhe til ek, anupam sār chhe re lol.2

There are four attractive beauty marks near Your right arm. Mahārāj, on the middle of Your neck is a beauty mark, which is indescribably [beautiful] and the essence [of all].2

 

વહાલા તારા ઉરમાં વિણગુણ હાર, જોઈ નેણાં ઠરે રે લોલ;

વહાલા તે તો જાણે પ્રેમીજન, જોઈ નિત્ય ધ્યાન ધરે રે લોલ...  ૩

Vahālā tārā uramā vinagun hār, joi nenā thare re lol;

Vahālā te to jāne premijan, joi nitya dhyān dhare re lol.3

My eyes have become affixed on the threadless garland on Your chest.

Mahārāj, having seen this, loving devotees engage in meditation [on that form] daily.3

 

રસિયા જોઈ તમારું રૂપ, રસિક જન ઘેલડા રે લોલ;

આવો વહાલા પ્રેમસખીના નાથ, સુંદરવર છેલડા રે લોલ...  ૪

Rasiyā joi tamāru rup, rasik jan gheladā re lol,

Āvo Vahālā Premsakhinā Nāth, sundarvar chheladā re lol.4

Mahārāj, having seen Your form, Your loving devotees become entranced. Come Mahārāj, Premsakhi’s beloved and handsome master..4

 

Pad 5

વહાલા તારી ભુજા જુગલ જગદીશ, જોઈને જાઉં વારણે રે લોલ;

કરનાં લટકાં કરતા લાલ, આવોને મારે બારણે રે લોલ... ૧

Vahālā tāri bhujā jugal Jagdish, joine jāu vārane re lol,

Karanā latakā karatā lāl, āvone māre bārane re lol.1

Mahārāj, [just] seeing both of Your arms dispels my miseries.

Mahārāj, please come to my doorstep, performing gestures with Your hands.1

 

વહાલા તારી આંગળિયુંની રેખા, નખમણિ જોઈને રે લોલ;

વહાલા મારા ચિત્તમાં રાખું ચોરી, કહું નહિ કોઈને રે લોલ...  ૨

Vahālā tāri āngaliyuni rekhā, nakh-mani joine re lol,

Vahālā mārā chittamā rākhu chori, kahu nahi koine re lol.2

Having seen the lines on Your fingers and Your gem-like nails...

...I will steal and keep [that vision] in my mind, not telling anyone else.2

 

વહાલા તારા ઉરમાં અનુપમ છાપ, જોવાને જીવ આકળો રે લોલ;

વહાલા મારા હૈડે હરખ ન માય, જાણું જે હમણાં મળો રે લોલ...  ૩

Vahālā tārā uramā anupam chhāp, jovāne jiva ākalo re lol,

Vahālā mara haide harakha na māy, jānu je hamanā malo re lol.3

My soul is very eager to see the indescribable imprint on Your chest. The happiness I feel in my heart is overflowing, as if You were to embrace me at this very moment.3

 

વહાલા તારું ઉદર અતિ રસરૂપ, શીતળ સદા નાથજી રે લોલ;

આવો ઓરા પ્રેમસખીના પ્રાણ, મળું ભરી બાથજી રે લોલ...  ૪

Vahālā tāru udar ati rasarup, shital sadā Nāthaji re lol,

Āvo orā Premasakhinā prān, malu bhari bāthaji re lol.4

You have an amazing stomach which always remains cool.

Oh Mahārāj, Premsakhi’s [very] life, please come near so that I may embrace You.4

 

Pad 6

વહાલા તારી મૂરતિ અતિ રસરૂપ, રસિક જોઈને જીવે રે લોલ;

વહાલા એ રસના ચાખણહાર, કે છાશ તે નવ પીવે રે લોલ... ꠶ ૧

Vahālā tāri murati ati rasarup, rasik joine jive re lol

Vahālā e rasanā chākhanhār, chhāsh te nav pive re lol.1

Affectionate devotees live by seeing Your murti, which is full of bliss. One who has tasted mango nectar [the bliss of God] no longer drinks buttermilk [worldly pleasures].1

 

વહાલા મારે સુખસંપત તમે શ્યામ, મોહન મન ભાવતા રે લોલ;

આવો મારે મંદિર જીવનપ્રાણ, હસીને બોલાવતા રે લોલ... ꠶ ૨

Vahālā māre sukh sampat tame Shyām, Mohan mana bhāvata re lol

Āvo māre mandir Jivanprān, hasine bolāvatā re lol.2

Mahārāj, You are my wealth and happiness, and are dear to my mind.

Mahārāj, [I remember when You] would laughingly call me; please come to my home.2

 

વહાલા તારું રૂપ અનુપમ ગૌર, મૂરતિ મનમાં ગમે રે લોલ;

વહાલા તારું જોબન જોવા કાજ, કે ચિત્ત ચરણે નમે રે લોલ... ꠶ ૩

Vahālā tāru rup anupam gaur, murati manamā game re lol

Vahālā tāru joban jovā kāj, ke chitta charane name re lol.3

Mahārāj, my mind is fond of the murti of Your wheat-coloured form. Mahārāj, my mind bows at Your feet in order to see Your youthful form.3

 

આવો મારા રસિયા રાજીવનેણ, મરમ કરી બોલતા રે લોલ;

આવો વહાલા પ્રેમસખીના સેણ, મંદિર મારે ડોલતા રે લોલ... ꠶ ૪

Āvo mārā Rasiyā Rājiva-nen, maram kari bolatā re lol

Āvo Vahālā Premasakhinā sen, mandir māre dolatā re lol.4

Mahārāj, [I remember when You] would speak explaining the essence [of all]; with Your lotus-like eyes, please come near. Mahārāj, [I remember when You] would sway; O Premsakhi’s friend, please come to my home.4

 

Pad 7

વહાલા તારું રૂપ અનુપમ નાથ, ઉદર શોભા ઘણી રે લોલ;

ત્રિવળી જોઉં સુંદર છેલ, આવોને ઓરા અમ ભણી રે લોલ... ꠶ ૧

Vahālā tāru rup anupam Nāth, udar shobhā ghani re lol

Trivali jou sundar Chhel, āvone orā ama bhani re lol.1

Mahārāj, Your form is indescribable, and Your stomach is very beautiful.

Mahārāj, I see the three beautiful wrinkles on Your abdomen; please come near, towards us.1

 

વહાલા તારી નાભિ નૌતમ રૂપ, ઊંડી અતિ ગોળ છે રે લોલ;

કટિલંક જોઈને સહજાનંદ, કે મન રંગચોળ છે રે લોલ... ꠶ ૨

Vahālā tāri nābhi nautam rup, undi ati gol chhe re lol

Katilank joine Sahajānand, ke man rangachol chhe re lol.2

Mahārāj, Your navel is unique, very deep and round.

Sahajānand, having seen Your curved stance my mind has become very happy.2

 

વહાલા તારી જંઘા જુગલની શોભા, મનમાં જોઈ રહું રે લોલ;

વહાલા નિત નીરખું પિંડી ને પાની, કોઈને નવ કહું રે લોલ... ꠶ ૩

Vahālā tāri janghā jugalni shobhā, manmā joi rahu re lol

Vahālā nita nirakhu pindi ne pāni, koine nav kahu re lol.3

Mahārāj, in my mind I continually see the beauty of both Your thighs. Mahārāj, I continually see Your calf and heel, and won’t tell anyone about it.3

 

વહાલા તારા ચરણકમળનું ધ્યાન, ધરું અતિ હેતમાં રે લોલ;

આવો વહાલા પ્રેમસખીના નાથ, રાખું મારા ચિત્તમાં રે લોલ... ꠶ ૪

Vahālā tārā charanakamalnu dhyān, dharu ati hetamā re lol

Āvo Vahālā Premasakhinā Nāth, rākhu mārā chittamā re lol.4

I very lovingly meditate on Your holy feet.

O Mahārāj, Premsakhi’s master, come near, for I wish to keep You within my mind.4

વહાલા તારા જુગલ ચરણ રસરૂપ, વખાણું વહાલમાં રે લોલ;

વહાલા અતિ કોમળ અરુણ રસાળ, ચોરે ચિત્ત ચાલમાં રે લોલ... ꠶ ૧

Vahālā tārā jugal charan rasarup, vakhānu vahālmā re lol

Vahālā ati komal arun rasāl, chore chitta chālamā re lol.1

Mahārāj, I lovingly praise the beauty of both Your feet.

Mahārāj, when You walk, the soles of Your feet – extremely soft, red, and full of bliss – captivate my mind.1

 

વહાલા તારે જમણે અંગૂઠે તિલ, કે નખમાં ચિહ્ન છે રે લોલ;

વહાલા છેલી આંગળીએ તિલ એક, જોવાને મન દીન છે રે લોલ... ꠶ ૨

Vahālā tāre jamane anguthe til, ke nakhamā chinha chhe re lol

Vahālā chheli āngaliye til ek, jovāne man din chhe re lol.2

Mahārāj, You have a beauty mark on Your right big toe and a marking in that nail. Mahārāj, my mind is [like] a beggar asking to see the beauty mark on Your last toe.2

 

વહાલા તારા નખની અરુણતા જોઈ, શશીકળા ક્ષીણ છે રે લોલ;

વહાલા રસચોર ચકોર જે ભક્ત, જોવાને પ્રવીણ છે રે લોલ... ꠶ ૩

Vahālā tārā nakhani arunatā joine, shashikalā kshina chhe re lol

Vahālā rasachor chakor je bhakta, jovāne pravin chhe re lol.3

Mahārāj, seeing the redness of Your nails, even the phases of the moon are belittled. Mahārāj, just as a chakor bird [is adept at indulging in] the beauty of the moon, devotees are [similiarly] adept in seeing [Your form].3

 

વહાલા તારી ઊર્ધ્વરેખામાં ચિત્ત, રહો કરી વાસને રે લોલ;

માગે પ્રેમસખી કર જોડી, દેજો દાન દાસને રે લોલ... ꠶ ૪

Vahālā tāri urdhva-rekhāmā chitta, raho kari vāsane re lol

Māge Premasakhi kar jodi, dejo dān dās ne re lol.4

Mahārāj, may the urdhva-rekhā [on the soles of Your feet] reside [permanently] in my mind. 

Premsakhi asks with folded hands to grant this gift to Your humble servant.4
